Taxonomy: f. Plasmodidae
Animal: Plasmodium vivax 5 01.jpg
Sites: Blood
Comment:
Plasmodium vivax male gametocyte in thin film - note fills enlarged red cell is oval shaped and compact with fibrils of chromatin and abundant brown granules with Schuffner's dots. Gametocytes appear in the blood 3-5 days after the start of the parasitaemia. The gametocyte looks somewhat smaller than you would expect with P.vivax but it is because it is in the thicker part of the film and so not as flattened as it would be in the area of ideal thickness in the thin film.
